The Absolute Rights newsletter is providing these suggestions on how to troubleshoot a semi automatic handgun, and will aid on the path to becoming a safer and more responsible firearm user.
The Absolute Rights newsletter ?Crisis Ops? column says the first thing to do is to identify the malfunction. Misfeeds are a relatively likely occurrence, explains The ?Crisis Ops? column, and this happens when a round is not loaded into the chamber. Next the ?Crisis Ops? column says to make sure the malfunction is not a squib load, which is a relatively dangerous malfunction, where there is not enough force to propel the bullet out of the barrel. The ?Crisis Ops? column says, a squib is often easily noticeable, because in a semi automatic pistol the slide will not cycle and a new round will not be chambered. The ?Crisis Ops? column says, if a squib load does happen, remove the magazine and clear the obstruction immediately.
The Absolute Rights newsletter ?Crisis Ops? column says, the next thing to do is to make sure the malfunction is not a hangfire, which is when the burning of the cartridge’s propellant is delayed. The ?Crisis Ops? column says, the only reason to try and immediately clear the malfunction is if there is live-fire going on, during a real confrontation, to lower the risk of the round eventually firing. The ?Crisis Ops? column says, if there is a hangfire, keep the firearm pointed downward for at least 10 seconds before attempting to clear.
The Absolute Rights newsletter ?Crisis Ops? column advises to correct the malfunction through immediate action, by pulling the slide back, then ejecting the last round. Closely observe the ejection and the round, says the ?Crisis Ops? column, because if there is still lead on the bullet, the round didn’t fire. If the lead is gone, says the ?Crisis Ops? column, it may indicate a weapon malfunction, so observe the chamber, and check for double feeds, or things that don’t belong. Then release the slide, seating the next round, the ?Crisis Ops? column says, deactivate the safety and attempt to fire the weapon. If it still fails to fire, the ?Crisis Ops? column advises, remove the magazine and eject the current round, then turn the weapon over to a gun expert for repair.

Malvern, PA (PRWEB) December 28, 2011
New findings from an Insurance Research Council (IRC) study of auto injury claim trends indicate that insurance claim costs countrywide have recently increased, reversing previous trends of declining or relatively stable costs. The report, Trends in Auto Injury Claims, 2011 Edition, documents important auto injury claim trends, both countrywide and by state, using private passenger auto claim data from national and state-level statistical reporting agencies.
Although injury claim severity (the average cost of injury claims) has been increasing steadily in the last several years, much of the increase has been offset by declining claim frequency, which produced relatively stable injury claim costs per insured vehicle. However, recent data indicate that claim frequency, on a countrywide basis, is no longer decreasing. In the case of personal injury protection (PIP) claims, the effect of rising claim severity has been magnified by a simultaneous increase in claim frequency. PIP claim costs per insured vehicle countrywide increased more than 18 percent from 2008 to 2010. For bodily injury (BI) liability claims, the effect of rising claim severity has been mitigated somewhat by stabilization, rather than an increase, in claim frequency. However, 2010 marks the first year since 1994 that BI claim frequency did not decline.
Much of the deterioration in PIP trends has been concentrated in three of the largest states with no-fault approaches to compensating auto injuries?Florida, Michigan, and New York. In Florida, the average PIP claim cost per insured vehicle in the state jumped 62 percent in just two years (2008-2010). PIP costs per vehicle in Michigan have been increasing rapidly for several years now?rising more than 120 percent over the last decade. The New York system has been on a roller coaster of rising and falling costs driven by a surge in suspected claim abuse in the New York City area.
?These are not encouraging findings for insurers or drivers,? said Elizabeth Sprinkel, senior vice president of The Institutes. ?While we hope these findings represent temporary conditions, we can?t be sure that is the case and can?t afford to ignore the factors driving rising claim costs.?
For more detailed information on the study?s methodology and findings, contact David Corum at (484) 831-9046, or by e-mail at irc@TheInstitutes.org. Copies of the study are available for $ 300 for an electronic version or $ 400 for a printed copy. Visit IRC?s Web site, http://www.insurance-research.org, for more information. The IRC recently published an in-depth analysis of PIP claims in New York, New York?s No-Fault System: Final Report on Closed Auto Injury Claims, which provides additional detailed information about recent trends and current conditions in New York?s automobile insurance system. The study is available now from the IRC Web site. A similar study of Michigan?s system will be published by IRC in early 2012.

The Oklahoma car accident lawyers at Atkins & Markoff hereby alert the public that members of the National Transportation Safety Board, or NTSB yesterday recommended at a meeting that legislatures enact a ban on the use of all cell phones in moving vehicles, including those who are using hands-free devices in order to bring down the number of auto accidents that occur because of inattentive drivers. The recommendation was published in an article that appeared in the Wall Street Journal.
Specifically, NTSB Chairperson Deborah A.P. Hersman stated that, ?It is time for all of us to stand up for safety by turning off electronic devices when driving.? She also cited statistics kept by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that revealed that an estimated 3,000 fatalities in car accidents that occurred last year could be traced to distracted drivers who were using cell phones to make phone calls and to send or receive text messages.
While the NTSB does not have legislative authority and the laws that are already in place in 35 states and the District of Columbia that limit the use of cell phones while driving are state laws, the board recommended federal action be considered in order to make the roads in the United States safer for all people.
Oklahoma car accidents occur at a high rate, and according to state statistics more than 70,000 auto accidents occur somewhere inside the state lines every year. These crashes lead to approximately 36,000 injuries and to more than 700 fatalities on an annual basis. Oklahoma is not currently one of the states that has enacted a specific cell phone law. Instead, the legislature in 2010 enacted House Bill 2276, which states in part that, ?The operator of every vehicle, while driving, shall devote their full time and attention to such driving.?

Farmington Hills, MI (PRWEB) August 22, 2011
Michigan Auto Law is kicking off a three-week campaign sweepstakes today against the dangers of texting while driving ? and the winner will receive a $ 1,032 check.
To enter, visit Facebook.com/MichiganAutoLaw, “Like” the law firm, watch a short video on distracted driving and fill out a quick contact form.
People who text and drive are 23 times more likely to be in a car accident, according to a study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, said Steven M. Gursten, head of Farmington Hills-based Michigan Auto Law, the state?s largest auto accident law firm
Why a $ 1,032 prize? According to the Insurance Institute of Michigan?s December 2010 data, the average auto insurance premium in Michigan is $ 1,032.02. The winner can use the money however he or she wishes, Gursten said, but he hopes winner will use it to buy the right kind of auto insurance.
“Part of this campaign also centers on our hope to inform drivers about just how many people are uninsured on our roads today. About 50 percent of Detroit drivers, for example, are driving without any auto insurance. And about 19 percent of all Michigan drivers have no auto insurance,” Gursten said, referencing published reports such as the Detroit Legal News and a news release by the Insurance Research Council.
Gursten frequently writes and lectures on distracted driving, and is available for comment.
“People are not properly protected. We?re hoping this campaign lets us spread awareness about just how dangerous texting while driving is, while also helping educate the public about the proper auto insurance they should be buying,” Gursten added. “We have drivers who are texting, talking on the phone, even surfing the Internet. Meanwhile, in some cities we have up to 50 percent of drivers riding with no insurance to protect them in case of a serious car accident. It’s the perfect storm.”
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM), is a special, low-cost additional insurance coverage people can buy to protect themselves from drivers who don’t have insurance. “It’s a must-have. For the price of a movie and popcorn, this UM/UIM can protect you and your family if you’re in a car accident with a driver who doesn’t have auto insurance.”
The distracted driving campaign will run three weeks and the winner will be announced on September, 12, 2011. Official rules and details can be found on Michigan Auto Law’s Facebook page.
“I hope this campaign will make drivers ? especially newer drivers ? think twice before they text and drive. If we can prevent even one car accident, it’s worth it,” Gursten said. “I also want people participating in this great opportunity to win cash for auto insurance to make a sincere pledge to not text and drive.”
